The popular American pizza restaurant chain Sbarro has its roots in Brooklyn, and before that, Italia. In 1956 the Sbarro family opened their first salumeria (grocery store) in Brooklyn, offering fresh, authentic Italian food and ingredients, including homemade mozzarella, imported cheese, and delicious sausage and salami. The grocery’s success spurred the family to open more locations around New York City; the family’s first mall-based restaurant, in Brooklyn's Kings Plaza Shopping Center, created the modern Sbarro concept: fresh, authentic Italian food, fast self service. This model has been replicated 1,000 times; look for a nearby Sbarro for good pizza, fast.
