Peet's Coffee and Tea has been hand-roasting coffee in small batches since 1966. Alfred Peet opened his original coffee store on the corner of Walnut and Vine Streets in Berkeley, CA; a native of Holland, Peet had grown up inside the coffee trade, and emigrated after WWII; he was dismayed at the poor quality of coffee widely consumed by Americans, and set out creating a darker roasting style that produced coffee with more richness and complexity, and a growing number of Americans responded.
